Summary[]
More of Izana's character is brought into light. Shirayuki faces new attention thanks to Raji's proclamation that she is Zen's fiancée.
Plot[]
Shirayuki is about to leave when she hears Zen call out to her from the second floor of the building she's in front of. Shirayuki hurriedly climbs up a nearby tree and jumps over to Zen. When she suddenly embraces him, Zen questions if anything is troubling her and admits there is. resulting in Zen hugging her back.
Zen asks Shirayuki if she is troubled by something Izana may have said or done and asks her to tell him what they talked about during their meeting. Shirayuki admits that she feels that Izana was warning her and making her doubt if she should stay in Clarines and with Zen. Hearing her admit this, Zen now better understands Izana's behavior as of late and apologizes to Shirayuki, admitting that he is not capable of hating his brother. When the two part, Zen admits that he let go of her too soon and that he was enjoying holding onto her.
Taking Shirayuki's hand, Zen begins to tell her a story about Izana that took place several years earlier. On Izana's seventeenth birthday, he was asked what he wanted as a gift. Izana answered that he wanted a new castle built bordering Lito and Sui territories. It is brought into question why Izana would want a castle built in this specific area as it is well known the Lord's of both areas have been feuding for some time. Izana is asked if he hopes to settle things between the two Lord's but he answers that he doesn't and simply wants a castle in this area for the beauty and value of the land. Zen came to learn that both Lord's soon began to send Izana great wealth in order to earn his favor and to help construction for the new castle. Soon, Zen learned that representatives from the Lord's came to speak to Izana in private and overheard them tell Izana that the money the Lord's were giving Izana were wrongfully taken from the people of Lito and Sui. When young Zen had spoken to Izana about the two representatives eventually being banished and the rumors concerning Izana and the money he was obtaining, Izana decided to take his brother with him to see the progress of the castle and to speak to both Lord's.
Zen witnessed as Izana spoke to each Lord about how the other was unfairly usurping money from their people in order to gain his favor and how he viewed this as an unwise move since they would be of no use to him if they left their people in ruins. With each Lord thinking they could take advantage of Izana's seeming dislike over the other, the two leaders began to use more underhanded methods to obtain the money they would give to Izana; something that Izana expected to happen.
Izana secretly investigated the two Lord's and their accomplices, eventually removing them all from power and decided they should suffer in the same way they made their people suffer. Afterwards, Izana appointed the two Lord's previous representatives as the new leaders of Lito and Sui and that the money he had obtained from the previous Lord's would be used to better the lands as he had never spent a single coin on himself.
Zen had apologized to Izana and admitted that he never thought that his brother had a plan the entire time and was simply using the Lord's for his own entertaining. Izana admits he did find amusement during the situation but Zen voices his concern about now having enemies who may want revenge. Izana is aware that the Lord's and their families may want revenge but feels that if no one is there to protect him when that time comes it will be a reflection of a failed legacy. Izana then warned Zen that if he does not make others around him aware that he is the king's son, Zen himself will never be aware of that. This made Zen fully realize that Izana would one day be king of Clarines and that he wanted to become someone worthy of being by his side.
Hand in hand, Zen escorts Shirayuki back to the castle and admits that Raji had something outrageous during the get together. He tells her that Raji had claimed Zen and Shirayuki were engaged but is unsure if others took the statement seriously or not. Zen warns Shirayuki that she may gain some unwanted attention from this. Shirayuki is actually happy hearing this as it means she will not have to leave and admits that she is not concerned about what others may say or think since they both know it's not true. Zen then hugs Shirayuki, now finding that it doesn't matter if others are watching.
The following day, the guards in front of the gate are discussing the supposed claim by Raji that Zen and Shirayuki are engaged. While Kai is overjoyed at the information, his companion warns him to not get too invested as it is just a rumor and the two wonder how Raji seems to know Shirayuki so well.
At the same time, Raji is touring the castle when the group comes to the medical wing. Raji begins to show signs of being unwell but tries to pass it off by admiring the exterior of the building and praising the herbalists work. When Garak offers to let Raji see the inside of the building, Raji attempts to get Sakaki to go in first since he wants to avoid seeing Shirayuki. His plan is successful as Sakaki is able to check each room before Raji enters.
As Zen finishes some tasks, he learns from Kiki that he will finally be able to see Raji off. As he makes his way to meet with Raji, Zen hears Obi ask if he is going to see Shirayuki. Zen denies that he is and questions Obi if he has seen Izana as he was hoping for a talk with him. Now free from the tour, Raji is relieved that he is done with everything but Sakaki thinks otherwise since they are not departing until that evening. Raji is suddenly overwhelmed with a stomach ailment he believes is from stress and worry from the situation. Sakaki offers to return to the medical wing to get medicine but is sworn to not tell anyone that the medication is for Raji.
In the medical wing, Shirayuki has finished a medication and begins taking it to the treatment center. As she does, several guards and servants are heard discussing the rumor about her and Zen with many believing it to be true since Shirayuki appears so close to Zen, Kiki, and Mitsuhide. Despite this, Shirayuki does not let herself be bothered by everything being said.
In the castle, Zen locates Izana and asks for a word. Izana instead requests they spar as he suspects that Zen does not simply wish to talk. As the two spar, Izana clearly holds the upper-hand and encourages Zen to start speaking. The younger prince demands to know why his brother treats Shirayuki the way he does since he does not know her that well. Izana answers that he is too busy to get to know someone who potentially is a distraction. When Zen becomes angered at this, Izana appears joyous at his brother's reaction and claims that his suspicion of Zen being in love with Shirayuki was right from the start. Despite this, Izana warns Zen that it's not always possible to have what he wants since Shirayuki may not offer much to the kingdom besides her rare hair. Zen claims that Izana should be the one on guard since Shirayuki has proven herself to surpass people's pre-conceived expectations of her. As Izana ends the spar, Zen promises that having Shirayuki in his life will not distract him from his path but is told by Izana to leave her behind; something that Zen will not do.
As Izana enters the hall, he speaks to Kiki and Mitsuhide about why they allowed Zen to bring Shirayuki into their lives. Mitsuhide answers that it's because he was watching Zen that he allowed this to happen. As Izana leaves, Kiki and Mitsuhide believe that Zen has finally stood up to his brother.
Outside Raji is trying to locate Sakaki as he continues to suffer from his stomach ache. As he leans against a wall, he is startled when Shirayuki appears. Raji attempts to be casual and leave but doubles over in pain. Shirayuki tries to check on him when Raji notices the vile of medicine Shirayuki was taking to the treatment center. Thinking it's for him, he tries to consume the medicine only for Shirayuki to knock it out of his hand and warn him that it was meant for flesh wounds and not his stomach ailment. When Shirayuki warns Raji to be more careful as a neighboring prince, Raji takes offence to the way she speaks to him but finds himself stunned when Shirayuki claims that she can only respect Raji if he rules her home country in a manner she can be proud of.
Sakaki appears and informs Raji that he needs to be examined before any medicine can be prescribed to him. After Raji declines Shirayuki's offer to take him to the treatment center, Shirayuki realizes that Garak will not be happy the medicine she was delivering was wasted. Izana voices his agreement and claims that Shirayuki should realize that she's better being with Raji since it may be hard for her to live in Clarines with Izana present.
Shirayuki tells Izana that she does not intend to return to Tanbarun or back down from Izana's treatment toward her. Seeing that Shirayuki is brace enough to keep eye contact with him, Izana suddenly kisses her forehead. Izana asks if she has come to dislike Clarines but Shirayuki says that she doesn't since it is the country where she met Zen.
That evening, Raji is getting ready to depart and is worried if Shirayuki may appear at the send off. He requests Sakaki to bow once toward the castle before they leave. As Shirayuki prepares more medicine, she is determined to stay on the path she has chosen and has found a new source of determination.
