Plot[]
While doing some paperwork, Zen thinks about how it's natural for people to want to form real connections with others while still staying on the path before them. But when they find a genuine connection with someone, they want to hold onto it no matter what.
Garak and Obi check on Shirayuki. They notice that she's finally awake but still seems under the influence from the alcohol Garak gave her. After Garak heads back to her office, Obi tries to see how Shirayuki is doing only for the young woman to leave her room without a word. Meanwhile, Kiki arrives in Garak office looking for Obi and learns that he's watching Shirayuki who's still recuperating after Garak's earlier prank.
Out in the courtyard, Obi continues to follow Shirayuki as she mutters a list of supplies to herself and comes across a problem when she realizes she doesn't know how to ride a horse. Obi suspects that Shirayuki is planning on returning to Tanbarun. Shirayuki attempts to distract Obi but it doesn't work and he says that he will not leave her alone. This makes Shirayuki realize that Obi has been at her side the entire day as she tried to sober up and is touched by his gesture. Obi then notices something in the distance and has Shirayuki follow him into a building. He momentarily leaves her and manages to intercept a message being tossed over the wall by a spy. Obi captures the man and demands to know who hired him to spy on Shirayuki but the man denies writing the message or having been hired by anyone.
After the man is lead away by the palace guards, Obi confirms with Shirayuki that something like this was bound to happen. Shirayuki feels that it's a waste of their time as they will not learn anything but Obi believes that some people will take anything they can get from the situation. Obi then asks Shirayuki how she thinks Zen is handling his royal duties. Shirayuki believes that Zen is being himself and tells Obi how Zen was when they first met. She believes that Zen loves his country deeply and has people around him that he can trust and help him along the way. After remembering when Zen gave him his trust, Obi states that he believes Shirayuki is unaware of how much her own presence has on Zen.
She instantly becomes worried at thinking she is causing Zen problems but Obi instead manages to get her to admit that she's frustrated she doesn't know how to fix the situation to cause Zen less problems; such as the Lockstow punishment. Obi now understands that her earlier muttering of supplies meant that she was planning on returning to Lockstow to check on the soldiers. Shirayuki says that she had asked Zen how he felt about it but could tell from how he had gripped her hand that he was upset about it but was covering his emotions.
Obi now sees that Shirayuki does the same at times and advises her to take action herself when she needs to instead of waiting for something to happen. However, he warns her that venturing out on her own is something she should try to avoid; especially since there was a suspicious person around. Obi sees that Shirayuki and Zen are alike in jumping into things unless someone is there to stop them.
In order to ease her mine about Lockstow, Obi confesses that he had recently visited the fort when he had been away. Zen had allowed him a few days away from the castle and, knowing Zen and the others were worried about the soldiers, he had taken the chance to check in on them. He then presents a detail progress report on the soldiers condition and seco plant picked for her by Shuka. Hearing how the soldiers promised to continue working together, Shirayuki feels at ease and thanks Obi. As she attempts to head back to her room, Shirayuki suddenly sways and nearly falls but Obi is able to catch her. As she passes out again, Obi places her on his back and heads back to her quarters.
Kiki enters Zen's office and hands him a note she found when she had tried to locate Shirayuki and Obi. Zen becomes annoyed at the letter and hurries off to find them but remembers to ask Kiki for a certain item he had requested. When Zen leaves, Kiki informs Mitsuhide about the incident of Shirayuki becoming intoxicated and Obi taking care of her. Although he finds it humorous at first, he feels confident that Shirayuki is being looked after properly.
Mitsuhide then notices that Zen's desk drawer is partially open and notices the tip of the arrow that Atri had tried to shoot Zen with. Mitsuhide recalls when he gave the piece to Zen after he had been relieved of house arrest after the fight against the Lito rebels. Although they both admit that Atri's background story never truly added up, Zen had wanted to believe that there was someone he could be friend's with. Mitsuhide tries to assure Zen that there will be people he can trust in the future and that he mustn't always be suspicious of everyone least he right away think of them as his enemies. He tells Zen that he should first learn who his allies are and to not rush into anything blindly. Knowing he himself is inexperienced, Mitsuhide promises that he will become someone that Zen can trust and vows that he will always be at his side. Neither of them noticing that Izana was listening to their conversation until he decided to leave them alone. Standing, Zen addresses Mitsuhide by his first name and makes his own promise of becoming a prince that his people can be proud of.
Coming out of his flashback, Mitsuhide realizes just how much things have changed between he and Zen over the years. Meanwhile, Zen is finally able to locate Obi as he continues carrying Shirayuki. After giving Obi a light scolding for not having been where he was suppose to while watching Shirayuki, Zen confirms with Obi that he had managed to apprehend a spy looking for information on Shirayuki.
After getting Shirayuki back to her room, Obi tells Zen that Shirayuki had planned to return to Lockstow but was stopped because she was still drunk, didn't know how to ride a horse, and Obi wouldn't let her leave. As Zen realizes that Shirayuki saw the Lockstow situation was worrying him, Obi suggests the two go to the fort together. Handing Obi a drink, Zen praises him for the work he did. He then presents Obi with a gift, an identification tag and the formal title as Official Messenger to the Second Prince of Clarines.
Obi questions why Zen would make him his official messenger instead of Shirayuki's body guard. Zen happily explains the reason is because it's somewhat of a decoy title so that no one else will suspect that Obi is more than just Zen's messenger. Obi puts together that this means he is Shirayuki's first line of defense and that being Zen's messenger will mean that Zen will be the first to know if anything happens to her. It will also help keep others from being nosy since it will appear that Obi is just working for Zen.
Zen promises that he will become a better prince and will stand by the people who have stood by him.
