Summary[]
A messenger delivers news to Izana, who is visibly furious. Obi departs from the Sereg Knight base to return to Lilias, while Zen announces that they will be returning to Wistal Palace.
Izana expresses his relief that that Zen is alive, and then hears Zen's reasons for wishing to keep Toka Bergat's failed assassination of Zen a secret. Zen explains that the request is not to be lenient to Toka, but in order to give Tsuruba and Tariga the opportunity to grow and rebuild the Bergat clan as protectors of the north without the burden of their brother's crimes. Izana agrees to consider the request.
The investigation of the Bergat clan's conspiracy involving attacks on noblemen and the Sereg Knight base provide sufficient evidence to expose Lord Bergat as the mastermind behind the scheme, with Lord Taws and his sons as accomplices. Toka is imprisoned, a greater portion of the clan's territories are seized, and House Bergat is stripped of its title of count. The confiscated territories are granted to Haruto, the warden of Wirant, while Tsuruba, as the next in line in succession, becomes the head of House Bergat and inherits the title of viscount. However, both Tsuruba and Tariga are to be monitored, with Tsuruba to return home to rebuild the clan and Tariga to serve at Wirant Castle to support his clan from the outside.
The Bergat brothers visit Zen and inform him of their hopes to live up to being protectors of the people without fail. Zen bluntly tells them they will fail, but as long as they have people to point out their errors and support them, they will not keep failing for long. When he asks if they have anyone else aside from each other to rely on, they admit the do not. Zen tells them to work on finding allies and that friendships can form from unexpected circumstances, like his own relationships with Kiki and Mitsuhide. With this encouragement from Zen, the brothers express their gratitude to Zen for giving them an opportunity to begin again.
After the Bergats leave, Zen asks if Obi has returned, remarking they cannot plan their sabbatical without him. Obi appears, and Mitsuhide and Kiki reveal that Obi and Shirayuki returned to Wistal Palace the day before, but everyone kept the news from Zen so he wouldn't be distracted until his work was completed. They're all planning to visit Shirayuki, but agree to let Zen see her first.
