Summary[]
Shirayuki meets Kihal Toghrul, a bird trainer seeking help from Zen to protect her islands birds from being hunted by greedy noblemen. During the scenario, Zen's feelings for Shirayuki become clear.
Plot[]
As Shirayuki finishes clean up of the garden, Obi playfully comments how she appears to again be over working. When Obi jumps down from the tree, Shirayuki notices that he's wearing a proper uniform. Obi informs her that there are special guests vising the castle and Zen required Obi to dress properly. After Shirayuki is unable to get Ryuu's attention, she notices an exotic bird flying above them that appears to be controlled with a whistle being blown by a mysterious woman.
Shirayuki meets the woman who reveals that she is at the castle for a meeting with Zen but admits that she's incredibly nervous and finds comfort in speaking with Shirayuki. The woman introduces herself as Kihal Toghrul, the trainer of the bird, Popo. Kihal explains that she's from an island where there are many birds like Popo. The birds have exceptional hearing and can hear things from up in the sky to down in the sea by listening to the waves to detect mineral ores. Kihal then reveals her true reason for needing to see Zen. Despite her island being on the southern part of Clarines territory, it also overlaps with another territory wherein a new lord has dominion. The new lord and several of his friends have taken to hunting the birds and causing their numbers to dwindle as the birds feathers are a rare commodity that sell for a hefty price.
Kihal and her people had tried to get the lord and his party to stop hunting the birds but were ignored and told to speak with Zen instead. Even so, Kihal is unsure of what Zen would think or do and thinks that he may be like the other nobility she's met; cruel and spiteful. Shirayuki tells Kihal that Zen is the opposite of what she thinks. Kihal confesses that she is carrying the hopes of her people to save the birds but is unsure of what she can do to save them.
Later, Kihal and the new lord meet with Zen but he admits that there isn't much he can do to prevent the birds from being hunted. As he will give his answer the following day, Zen suggests that Kihal discusses the matter further with Viscount Blaker who right away shows that he believes he will be the victor in the matter.
That evening, Obi finds Shirayuki in the greenhouse and tells her the outcome of the meeting. Shirayuki wonders if the birds of Yuri Island have anything special to offer that would protect them from being hunted. In his office, Zen knows that his hands are tied in the matter concerning the birds of Yuri Island and is aware the viscount knows this. After a brief meeting with Shirayuki, Zen calls Kihal back to his office where he asks her about the birds abilities to fly long distances and how they are able to locate specific boats and areas. After Kihal explains how whistles and bells are used to help send the birds to target areas, Zen suggests the offer of having the birds become a form of messenger birds and offers a test to be held the following day. Kihal agrees to the test on the condition that she picks the person to ring the bell.
That night, Kihal goes to Shirayuki to ask her to be the one to ring the bell. She explains that she still does not fully trust Zen and that Shirayuki seems like her closest ally and the person she can learn to trust Zen through. Shirayuki agrees to help and Kihal is overjoyed at her decision.
The next day, Zen presents the plan of the test. Popo will be sent to a watch tower ten kilometers west of the castle that would normally take forty minutes to reach by horse. The assistant at the tower will sign the document and give the bell to the bird before sending it back within a time frame of twenty-five minutes. Hearing that Shirayuki is the one helping Kihal, Lord Blaker claims that the test being held is all because of Shirayuki and her relationship with Zen. He takes the opportunity to join Shirayuki to the tower as a means of keeping an eye on things as he claims to be suspicious of what the outcome may be. Although Zen appears hesitant to allow this, he agrees when Shirayuki allows it and carries out the test that will begin at four o'clock. Right at the strike of four, Zen starts the test and Kihal sends Popo to locate Shirayuki at the lakeside watch tower.
At the tower, Shirayuki encounters Lord Blaker who attempts to make a deal with her to fail the test in exchange for his support at a noble scenery since he believes that her being of a lower status will prevent her from achieving greater things. Shirayuki immediately declines his offer and, in his anger, Lord Blaker steals Shirayuki's bell and tosses it into the lake below them. He locks Shirayuki inside the tower to prevent her from trying to stop him. As Obi hears the commotion and makes his way up to check on things, Lord Blaker continues to try to put down Shirayuki by trying to make her believe that Zen would not believe her of what took place and would only listen to someone of elite status.
Shirayuki fires back that social status is not what defines someone and that their character is what matters. Opening a window, Shirayuki jumps out. Obi spots her falling and jumps into the lake after her. As Shirayuki quickly informs Obi of what happened, one of the soldiers puts Lord Blaker under arrest for his actions and interfering with the test.
Spotting Popo flying above them and appear to pass them, Shirayuki and Obi begin frantically trying to find the bell. After noticing Popo targeting a certain area of the lake, Shirayuki remembers how Kihal explained how Popo's species can hear mineral ores underwater. She dives down and spots the whistle.
With two minutes left until the test ends, everyone begins to doubt that Popo will make it back in time. However, Kihal soon hears Popo and uses her whistle to call him in just before time runs out. After Lord Haruka confirms all of the signatures, Zen officially makes Popo's species a new form of messenger birds for Clarines and makes them a protected species. As Kihal celebrates, Lord Haruka presents a note to Zen informing him of Lord Blaker's actions and arrest, and that Shirayuki received a minor injury in the process.
As Zen heads to the watch tower, Lord Haruka informs Izana of what took place and how he was certain Zen would have not allowed Lord Blaker to join Shirayuki at the watch tower since it appeared obvious he only wanted to further his own advancement and wealth. Izana sees otherwise and realizes how much trust Zen has in Shirayuki and their soldiers. However, Izana still believes that Zen still has yet to figure out how to protect those he cares about.
At the tower, Zen is informed of everything by the lead guard and makes his way inside to find Shirayuki. Seeing that she has a minor injury on her arm and hearing Shirayuki admit she wouldn't hide it from him from knowing he would be upset, Zen suddenly becomes overwhelmed at seeing her smile and kisses her.
