 Manga Chapter 43

Hisame Lugis (ヒサメ・ルーギス; Hisame Rūgisu) is the second son of Count Lugis and the Vice-Captain of the Sereg Knight Circle. At age eleven, he decided he wanted to marry Kiki Seiran to raise his social status. Since he had no title of his own to inherit and didn't enjoy being under his older brother's command, becoming the consort of the next head of the Seiran family was the next best thing. As a teenager, after learning his initial proposal for Kiki's hand in marriage was rejected, he challenged her to a duel to become her fiancé. He believed she would be more accepting of the proposal if she lost in a contest than through a prolonged courtship. In the end, Hisame loses to a two-on-two duel with Kiki and Mitsuhide.

Following his defeat, Hisame reflects on the depths he had sunk to on his social-climbing trip. He finds a different way to avoid his brother becoming his lord and commander by gaining knighthood and joining the Sereg Knight Circle.

Due to a series of events that surprised him despite his work in trying to manipulate them, Hisame is currently Kiki's fiancé.

Appearance[]

Hisame is a tall man with messy dark hair and purple eyes. He often wears a relaxed expression, which is sometimes accompanied with (faked) cheerfulness. He typically is shown wearing clothes that are dark accompanied by a pair of colored teal-blue earrings.

Hisame's most casual outfit is the breastplate uniform of the Sereg Knight Circle with a matching dark cloak on top. His aforementioned earrings match the background color of the Sereg Crest, which is centered on the front of the collar of his uniform. At formal events where he is not representing the Knight Circle, but instead attending as the future son-in-law to Earl Seiran and fiancé to the Seiran heir, he combs his hair into a tidier style which his fringe entirely out of his face.

Personality[]

Hisame is often shown with a sly and teasing nature, along with a relaxed gaze. Though seemingly suspicious during his first appearance, he has displayed loyalty towards Zen and his allies throughout the rest of the story. He seems to have grown exponentially in maturity following his defeat by Kiki and Mitsuhide as a teenager. He still enjoys employing sly gambits but he is much less inappropriate with them as an adult.

Despite Hisame's loyalty to Zen, he initially had a rocky relationship with Mitsuhide, stemming from the duel during which first they met. As a result, the two spoke with sarcasm when communicating, and often held contests that were merely based on dislike rather than healthy rivalry. It didn't help that Mitsuhide was Hisame's favorite person to tease. However, after the incident with the Bergatt House, during which Hisame assisted in freeing the framed Mitsuhide, his relationship with Mitsuhide got better. While Hisame still enjoys teasing Mitsuhide, they are almost to the point of being friends.

History[]

Hisame is the second son of Count Lugis, who is an an old friend of Earl Seiran. Upon first meeting Kiki at age 11, he decided that he wanted to marry into the Seiran family, because he would rather be under a different Earldom than be under the rule of his brother Amakize, the heir to Lugis lands.

He is first seen in a flashback five years prior to canon. Upon learning that Earl Seiran had rejected his formal proposal for Kiki's hand, he challenged Kiki to a duel for her hand instead, which he and his dueling partner lost to Kiki and Mitsuhide. In the interceding years, he joins the Sereg Knight Circle, eventually rising in rank to become Vice-Captain.

Relationships[]

Kiki Seiran[]

In the past in his youth Hisame had an adversarial relationship with Kiki, asking her to marry him without the approval of their heads of house because he saw it as an advantageous match for him and her as interesting. When she agreed to duel him for her hand in marriage he expected her to show up without a second and thus lose the fight and have to marry him even though he knew she didn't want to at the time. He was surprised (as was she) when Mitsuhide arrived with Prince Zen to their duel with Mitsuhide acting as her second. As they aged and matured he admitted that his way of trying to propose to her was wrong. Kiki would eventually become his his fiancée in a mutually agreed upon decision, and is increasingly shown as the person who knows and understands him best. They originally formed a temporary marriage agreement out of necessity during the Bergatt incident to draw out those who were attacking Kiki's potential suitors. However, they reaffirmed their engagement after Kiki's marriage proposal to Mitsuhide was turned down. Before their formal engagement, Hisame sought out Kiki's company at banquets and formal events. While they were under the fake marriage agreement, he was also supportive of Kiki's decision to propose to Mitsuhide. Once Hisame and Kiki reaffirm their engagement, they spend more time getting to know each other, with Hisame occasionally attending soirées with Kiki as her guest. They openly communicate about their expectations of each other, with Hisame telling Kiki that she can set any standards that she wishes for in their relationship.

Mitsuhide Rouen[]

Mitsuhide is Hisame's favorite person to tease and annoy. Still, their relationship started as a much more violently antagonistic one due to Hisame's underhanded attempts to force Kiki to agree to an engagement with him as children. Their relationship improved gradually over the years, to the point that Mitsuhide has even shared his room with Hisame when he needed a place to board for the night. They have also been seen drinking together (mostly due to Hisame cajoling Mitsuhide into it).

Zen Wistaria[]

Prince Zen and Hisame have a generally cordial relationship, getting to know each other better since Hisame's engagement to Kiki. Hisame aided Prince Zen and his aides greatly during the Bergatt incident, supplying him with intel about the Bergatt twins, who were training at the Sereg Knight Circle under aliases.

Amakize Lugis[]

Hisame's elder brother whom Hisame can't stand, and whose status as the heir to Count Lugis is the reason behind all of Hisame's desperate attempts to find a way to avoid living as subservient to House Lugis. The brothers have intentionally gone years without seeing each other.

Earl Seiran[]

His future father-in-law has never much cared for Hisame and turned down his initial proposal for Kiki's hand in marriage all those years ago immediately on Kiki's behalf before even consulting his daughter. When he heard of Hisame and Kiki's plan to announce their engagement to draw out those attacking Kiki's prospective suitors he was displeased with the idea of even a mock commitment. However, by that time his concern lay more with the Lugis House in general than just Hisame who had matured over time to become someone Earl Seiran could almost put up with. He was irritated but understanding when Kiki and Hisame turned the mock engagement into a real one after Kiki was turned down by Mitsuhide.

Count Lugis[]

His father. Not much has been mentioned about the relationship between Hisame and his father, but Earl Seiran has noted that Hisame is more like his father than his elder brother.

Sereg Knight Circle[]

His subordinates at the Knight Circle are in awe but terrified of him and his sharp wit, cunning plans, and highly sensitive unpredictable nature. His Captain mostly despairs of him and spends a fair amount of time giving Hisame orders and requests to behave that he knows Hisame will find loop-holes in or ignore outright.

Obi[]

Hisame is acquainted with Obi but doesn't know him well. Obi was upset to learn that Kiki was engaged to him, because with her marriage she wont be able to act as Zen's retainer full time and wont be his full time co-worker anymore though he claims it's just because she's marrying someone from a different knight circle. He seems to have picked up on Obi's crush on Shirayuki even in their very little time spent together.

Shirayuki[]

Hisame has met Shirayuki and seems to find her interesting, and found a way to help her when a noble tried making unwanted advances towards her, though in line with his personality did so in a way that amused him and made others slightly uncomfortable.
