Kiki Seiran (木々・セイラン; Kiki Seiran) is a main character, serving as one of Zen Wistaria’s close aides and Sir Mitsuhide Rouen’s partner. She has a quiet and serious personality and is the only named female knight in the tale, being a Knight of the Royal Guard. As the eldest and only child of Earl Seiran, she is his heir and will inherit his estate when he retires. With her father making it clear he intends to step down from the position long before his death, she is set to become one of the youngest lords of Clarines. She became Zen’s aide when they were both young, shortly after Sir Mitsuhide, and has spent so long serving at his side that even Zen’s family members expect her and Mitsuhide to accompany Zen when they ask for a private audience with him. She is currently engaged to Sir Hisame Lugis.

Appearance[]

Kiki-concept

Kiki's concept art for the anime.

She has mid-length blond hair, which she normally ties into a low ponytail, and blue-grey eyes (violet in the anime). She is of average height.

When she was younger, at the time she met Zen and Mitsuhide, she had her hair cut into a short bob just below her chin. Her haircut was intended to signify her father that she intended to act as a blade rather than a lady and was not yet prepared to start acting like a proper lady heiress. At that time, she was mistaken to be a young man by Mitsuhide.

She wears smart and formal clothes, nothing revealing. She usually wears formal royal attire. She wears a sleeveless black top as an undergarment and black leggings. On top of them, she wears a purple outer with a Chinese styled collar; the outer has many gold embellishments. The middle part and the collar are darker, while the bottom part was split into two parts. There are three sections of fabric on the outer, and an attachment which holds her sword. She wears long purple boots with gold embellishments. She wears a pair of arm guards on her lower arm and wrists.

Her sheath is dark blue, while the locket and chape are silver. Bandages cover the hilt, and there’s an aquamarine-colored jewel/stone on top of it.

Kiki is seen wearing a dress only a few times. The first time was at the royal ball where she first encountered Mitsuhide, the second time was for the mock marriage interview with Zen, the third was for the Seiran Harvest festival, and the fourth was during the soiree at the Rugilia Estate. She is irritated at having to wear dresses at first, but she seems to be more at ease with having to wear one at formal events as she ages. Her most common complaint about wearing a dress is that she cannot wear her sword, though she has found ways to hide a blade while wearing one, and she seems to have voluntarily opted for a dress at the harvest festival.

When she was ‘captured,’ she was dressed as a poorer lady, wearing a knitted top and a shirt with her hair down. Later on in the series, she cuts her hair short again, reminiscent of when she first started as Zen’s aide.

In the anime, her hair is a lighter, cooler shade of blonde, and her eyes are a dark indigo blue.

Personality[]

Kiki has a very stoic personality, which, as noted by her father, is just like her mother’s. She rarely shows any other expression other than a disinterested one and is an excellent swordsman. Only in the presence of Zen, Mitsuhide, Obi, Shirayuki, and later Hisame does she open up more. She is seen joking with them and smiling, but only on rare occasions, and her jokes tend to be delivered with a straight face, which causes a delay in realizing what she’s said. When she first met Zen and Mitsuhide, she was very closed off. She kept her counsel and was anti-social, feeling she needed to rely on only herself and not ask for help from others. Over the years of being together, she has opened up to them. She’s also very stubborn about getting married, as her father has tried multiple times to set her up with someone, although she does admit later on that she plans to propose to Mitsuhide when the time comes. Her interactions with Hisame shortly before and following their engagement make it clear that few would be comfortable with her affections. As their conversations tend to be multilayered in their meanings, peppered with double entendres, sweet, sarcastic, doting, biting, and blunt all at once, which is just the kind of magniloquence which makes the more prosaic Mitsuhide uncomfortable and feel out of his depth.

History[]

Chapter43Color

Kiki prior to becoming one of Zen's aides.

Kiki had been Zen’s aide for five years before they met Shirayuki. She is also the heir to the Seiran family, one of the oldest and most powerful noble families in the Clarines Kingdom.

Kiki first met Zen when she was studying swordsmanship at Sereg. Her first introduction to Mitsuhide happened at a ball where they were both avoiding the rest of the guests in an alcove. However, she didn’t give him her name, because she wanted to be recognized as a swordswoman instead of as a noble. Mitsuhide, for his part, didn’t recognize her the next time he saw her, mistaking the sword-carrying youth for a young man rather than connecting her to the noblewoman he’d briefly spoken to previously.
