The royal palace overlooking the sea sitting prominently in the inner bailey at the heart of Wistal Castle. It is the traditional home of the monarch of Clarines and houses the royal throne room. It is also a place where people of various social status gather.
History[]
Years before Shirayuki fled to Clarines the entire royal family lived in residence at the Wistal Palace, but following king Kain's untimely demise and his regent widowed wife contracting illness after working herself too hard only the princes remained in residence, with Queen Haruto moving to the castle at Wilant for the remainder of her reign. The date of the building of the palace is unknown but it is a noticeably newer construction than the outer two defensive walls and exterior gates of the citadel.
Architecture[]
Overview[]
The palace is not one of the castle's fortified buildings, despite hints of fortifications in the architecture they are usually depicted as decorative non-functioning pieces such as waist-high merlons and molding designed to look like machicolations without holes need to function as such, though one portion of the palace is depicted with functional machicolations in some chapters and without in others. The palace's grand architecture ensures it cannot function as the castle's reduit as in the event of the inner bailey being overtaken the palace would be nearly impossible to defend, and the castle has at best something along the lines of a bergfried rather than a keep. Instead of being a defensive militarily minded building the palace was built as a beautiful tall spectacle of the country's wealth with grand tall hexagonal towers, vibrant blue roofing tiles, open airy rooms, large windows and outdoor hallways and courtyards incorporating lush gardens and fountains.
Unlike the surrounding defensive structures the castle is fully plastered, making it impossible to tell which parts are stone and which are wood from a quick view outside of some of the bare stone corbelling. The rooftops are such a striking blue that it seems they are made up of tiles rather than slate.
Differences Between the Manga and Anime[]
The palace and surrounding complex are depicted with a far more simplistic design in the anime than they are in the source material.
Accommodation[]
Members of the royal family reside in the deepest parts of the palace.
It has been noted that individuals working inside the palace usually lives outside of the main palace. Rooms are provided for them near the main palace in the lodging houses that are spread all over the premises of the palace. This, however, excludes certain workers out of convenience. The Chief Pharmacist lives inside the palace to take care of the pharmacy, and aides are also allowed to reside near their masters' side to be able to reach them quickly.
Residents living in the lodging houses can still be able to live inside the main inner palace under the name of a member of the royal family. This noticeably happens to Shirayuki.
Identification[]
Anyone entering the palace is required to have an identification (ID) tag. The ID tags are color-coded. It states the name and occupation of an individual. An order and permit to enter the castle without an ID tag can be given to gatekeepers and guards by the royal family and various high-ranking nobles only
